Low Voltage Lighting Fixtures: The Six Types To Choose From

Low voltage lighting fixtures are not only found on monorail or track lighting.  There are several other ways they can be used in and around any home. There are numerous low voltage outdoor fixtures; there are about six types of low voltage indoor fixtures.

Track Lighting Heads

The first type of low voltage fixtures is the kind most people think of - the heads for track lighting systems.  These simple fixtures can be found in functional-looking or contemporary designs.

Some of these fixtures have curved stems while others have straight ones. Some are longer than others.  Some rotate 360 degrees, although others do not. These may come with a track system or they may be bought separately. They are very conducive to task lighting in a kitchen.

Pendant Lights

These are lights that are suspended from a ceiling, usually from a monorail or track lighting system.  They can be made of expensive glass from countries like Italy, Spain, and others.  They can open at the bottom of the pendant, spreading direct light into the area.  Conversely, they can have a frosted glass cup at the bottom and be open at the top.  This produces a more diffuse light.

Wall-Mounted Lights

Many companies make these lights to accent a wall or something that is on a wall.  Most of these are some form of wall sconce.  Some point their light up for accenting architectural points of interest near the ceiling.  Some point the glow downwards, perhaps onto a portrait or other piece of art.

Ceiling Lights

The variety of ceiling lights should prompt the formation of several subcategories in itself.  There are some ceiling lamps that are very modern.  One example is a light that is made of bendable rods of light that can be shaped free form.

A more traditional style of ceiling lights is the chandelier.  There are dozens of low voltage chandeliers available that produce more illumination that chandeliers made with incandescent lighting.

Bathroom Lights

The main kind of low voltage bathroom lighting is mirror lighting.  You can buy an oval or a round mirror placed in a low voltage lighting wheel.  This allows you to put on make-up or shave in perfect illumination.  Of course, low voltage track lighting for general ambient lighting is also possible.

Functional Art

All kinds of functional art are available in low voltage versions.  You can find balloons, airplanes, and boats.  There are functional art pieces designed after nature's subjects, such as dragonflies and birds.

There are representations of the sun, moon, and stars.  There are even glass or plastic replicas of people doing various activities.  They may hang from a monorail lighting system.  All of them include one or more low voltage lamps inside them so that they are truly functional art.

There are dozens of lighting opportunities in most homes.  When you take a look at what you need and fill in the gaps, you may have more lighting than you had in the beginning.  If you use low voltage lighting fixtures, you will have many choices.
