Using Onion Lighting

When someone talks about onion lighting you probably think about the kind of lighting that was used in days gone by.  These types of lights are typically a globe shape and look like an onion which is where the name comes from.  You will find that these kinds of lights are used today and are still just as popular as they ever were.

The lights that are called onion lights have a decidedly old fashioned look about them.  When you are looking at one of these lights you are no doubt thinking about the colonial times and how the lights were used back then.  They would not look right in a contemporary or modern style decor.

These lights can be used on the outside of the home in both residences and for commercial purposes.  They are typically put inside a bronze or other metal cage to protect the delicate glass exterior.  You often see them against the home where they are used as a porch light.  The cage that protects the glass from being broken was also there originally to keep the flame from being blown out in the days when the illumination came from a fire.

The lighting can also be used inside the home for a unique look to your decor.  When they are used inside the home they are usually mounted on a wall for a very unique and old fashioned look.  Some people have also used this type of light for a candle holder.  When you are shopping for one of these lights you will find them in a number of finishes.

There are three different kinds of glass that can be used in an onion light.  The types are called clear, optic, and seedy.  There can be ridges in the glass that will look a great deal like a pumpkin.  The glass is purposely created to look less than perfect.  This helps them to look as authentic as possible. 

When this type of lighting is used in the home it will provide the right light and look in a room that is old fashioned and warm.  It is a welcoming and beautiful way to illuminate a room and use light for a part of the decor.  You will love its look when you get an onion light that is aged to look authentic and as though it came right out of history.
